Background of the Study
Youth unemployment is a pressing issue with far-reaching social implications, influenced by determinants such as education, socioeconomic status, and access to opportunities. In Ikom Local Government Area, Cross River State, youth unemployment is exacerbated by structural challenges including inadequate educational facilities, limited vocational training, and a scarcity of job creation initiatives (Udo, 2023). Social determinants like family background, community support, and regional economic disparities further compound the problem, leading to high levels of joblessness among young people (Adegoke, 2024). The persistence of youth unemployment not only affects individual livelihoods but also contributes to broader social issues, including crime and instability. This study investigates the various social determinants contributing to youth unemployment in Ikom, aiming to provide a comprehensive understanding of the underlying causes and suggest targeted interventions to reduce unemployment and foster socio-economic inclusion (Chinonso, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Ikom faces significant challenges with high youth unemployment driven by inadequate educational infrastructure, limited vocational opportunities, and broader socioeconomic disparities. These factors create an environment where young people struggle to secure gainful employment, leading to social and economic instability (Olu, 2023). This study seeks to explore the social determinants contributing to youth unemployment in Ikom and to identify critical areas for intervention, aiming to develop strategies that enhance employment opportunities and promote social inclusion.
Objectives of the Study:
To identify key social determinants of youth unemployment in Ikom.
To assess the impact of these determinants on joblessness among the youth.
To recommend strategies for mitigating youth unemployment.
Research Questions:
What are the primary social determinants of youth unemployment in Ikom?
How do these determinants affect youth job opportunities?
What interventions can effectively reduce youth unemployment?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: Social determinants significantly contribute to youth unemployment.
H2: Inadequate education and training are major factors in youth joblessness.
H3: Targeted social interventions can reduce youth unemployment.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it investigates the social determinants of youth unemployment in Ikom, providing insights that can inform effective policies and interventions. The findings will help stakeholders develop strategies to enhance employment opportunities and promote socio-economic stability among the youth (Akin, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to investigating the social determinants of youth unemployment in Ikom Local Government Area, focusing exclusively on social and economic factors affecting youth employment.
Definitions of Terms:
Social Determinants: Social factors that influence individual and community outcomes.
Youth Unemployment: The rate of joblessness among individuals typically aged 15-35.
Ikom Local Government Area: The administrative region in Cross River State where the study is conducted.
